Good to know
We spend our days explaining locks to people who have never had to think about them, and that is the voice these notes are written in. No jargon, no assumptions. Just what you need to know to keep your home, business and vehicle sensibly secured.

Locksmith FAQ

Lockout Services
I rent my place. Can I call a locksmith myself?
Yes. A tenant locked out of their own unit can arrange entry directly, and the identification check is the same: something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a bill or a piece of mail, plus photo identification. Where you may want to involve your landlord is any change to the lock afterwards, because tenancy rules in this province expect landlords and tenants to agree on lock changes and to share keys. A locksmith can note what was done for the building manager. Home Lockout Service
Will opening our glass storefront door damage it?
In almost every case the door, the glass and the lock are untouched. The mortise cylinder in the narrow stile is picked or decoded so the cam turns exactly as it would for your key, and the hookbolt or latch withdraws. Drilling comes up when a cylinder has seized, is packed with a broken key, or its security features and condition rule out a clean non-destructive opening, and if it comes to that you hear about it first and a new cylinder goes in during the same visit. Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?
Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in. Broken Key Extraction
Is the lock that was forced still usable?
Sometimes, and the locksmith tests it honestly. A deadbolt that stayed thrown while the frame gave way may be undamaged, though a kick can bend the bolt where it crossed the gap or crack the housing. A cylinder that was twisted, drilled or punched is finished. Reused hardware must operate as smoothly as new with the door open and closed; if it hesitates, it is replaced, because a lock that took a blow tends to fail at the worst moment. Change or Rekey Locks
What happens to my old keys?
They become ordinary pieces of brass. Once the cylinders are pinned to the new combination, the old keys turn nothing on your property, so there is no security reason to keep or hide them. Hand them to the locksmith for disposal or drop them in the metal recycling. If a former roommate or contractor still has one, it no longer matters, which is the whole reason for the visit. Keep only the new set, counted and tagged. Lock Rekeying
How long should the bolt be?
The bolt should extend at least 25 mm into the frame, which is the standard throw for a dwelling's entrance doors and the length most residential deadbolts provide. Part of the bolt stays inside the door for support while the rest sits in the pocket. A hardened steel insert that spins under a saw blade is a common feature worth having on doors that face a street or laneway. Deadbolt Installation
Can every door in the house work from one key?
Yes, provided the cylinders share a compatible keyway, which the locksmith checks when choosing hardware. New cylinders are pinned on site to a single new key and any existing locks worth keeping are repinned to match. Front, back, side and garage doors commonly end up on one key, and a shed or gate padlock can join them. You then decide how many copies exist and who holds each. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. Can a safe be repaired instead of replaced after drilling?
Often, yes, particularly for a mechanical lock, where a worn wheel pack, drive cam or spindle can be replaced individually within the existing lock body. An electronic lock's circuit board and keypad are less often repairable in place and are more commonly swapped for a comparable or higher-rated replacement unit that fits the same cutout. Safe Opening & Combination Change
What kind of floor can a safe be anchored to?
Solid concrete is the most straightforward surface, taking a masonry anchor bolt directly. A wood subfloor works too, provided the anchoring reaches into the floor joists beneath the surface layer rather than just the plywood or the flooring on top. Tile is the awkward case, since a bolt through it tends to crack the surrounding tiles, and an alternative anchoring point or a different spot in the room is usually the better route there. Safe Installation & Servicing
Will my door look different afterwards?
Barely. A high security cylinder sits in the same place as the old one and is usually distinguished only by a different keyway shape and sometimes a hardened collar. A graded deadbolt is a standard-looking deadbolt in your chosen finish. The reinforced strike is longer than the plate it replaces and the wrap-around reinforcer, if used, shows as a neat metal band on the door edge. The difference is felt when you lock up, not seen from the street. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
What information should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?
A list of the doors and other locks you want included, a copy of the lease or the property manager's contact, every existing key you can find, and a rough idea of who needs to open what. Note which doors, if any, are interchangeable cores and where the control key is. Knowing your quiet hours and who opens up in the morning helps the locksmith plan the order of work and the key handover. Commercial Rekeying
What happens if a master-level key goes missing?
The current chart shows exactly which doors that level was designed to reach, which for a lost top-level master can mean the whole property rather than one group. Depending on how the key was lost and who else already holds that level, the usual options are repinning the affected cylinders and reissuing keys to the remaining holders; a restricted keyway lowers the odds of an unauthorized copy being cut but is not proof that one has not been made. Without a current chart, the first task is reconstructing that scope. Master Key System Design
What credential types are available: cards, codes, fobs, phones?
A proximity card or fob held near a reader, a code typed on a keypad, or a mobile credential read from a phone are all in common use, and a single building can mix them by door or by person. Cards and fobs are simple to issue and switch off individually; a keypad needs no card to lose but a shared code eventually gets passed around; a mobile credential ties entry to a device the person already carries. Access Control Installation
Can one visit cover several doors in the same building?
Yes, and it is common. A building rarely has only one exit affected by an occupant-load or fire-rating question; stairway doors, assembly-room exits and any doors altered together during a renovation are usually assessed and fitted in the same visit, with one written record covering every device installed across the building. Car Keys
The alarm went off. Is that a problem?
It is expected. Opening a door without the fob or key wakes most factory alarms, and quieting them is part of finishing the job: a turn of the key in the door or ignition, or a press of the fob once the car has power, usually does it. An aftermarket alarm is reset from its own valet switch. The locksmith stays until the car is quiet and every lock has been cycled. Car Lockout Service
The car is leased or belongs to my employer. Can you still make me a key?
Yes, with the right paperwork. For a leased car, the lease agreement in your name together with your identification and the permit covers it. For a company vehicle, the locksmith needs authorization from the business: a work order, purchase order or letter naming the VIN and the person collecting the key. Mention the arrangement when you call so the correct document is ready and the record can be completed properly. Car Key Replacement
How is a proximity or smart key different to duplicate compared to a regular key?
A proximity key usually has no blade to trace, so the process is almost entirely electronic: pairing a new fob to the vehicle's receiver and enrolling it through the diagnostic connection so the car recognizes it as an additional key. Many still hide a small mechanical blade inside the shell for emergencies, and that blade is cut separately to match the door lock, even though it is rarely used day to day. Spare Car Key Duplication
Can you tell me which fob to buy before you arrive?
Often, yes, once the vehicle's identification number, model year and trim are known, since those details narrow down which fob part is actually compatible. Buying the wrong part number is a common reason a programming attempt goes nowhere, so confirming compatibility before ordering saves a returned part and a second visit. Key Fob Programming
